The Mancetter Bowl

Did you know? Even carpenters make strange choices. This Roman bowl is made of wood from the elder. Elder branches have a soft centre ('pith') which makes them easy to hollow out. People usually makes pipes and whistles out of them - but not bowls!

for - very hard, very heavy, cuts very cleanly, does not splinter or split easily.
against - difficult to work into clever shapes, can be too heavy for some jobs.
