Books - especially maps - shaped the way he thought and wrote about the world.

In fact, much of the planet was still unexplored by Europeans - and so unknown to Shakespeare.

This made it easier to imagine and write about unknown lands on earth - as Shakespeare did when he thought up The Tempest.
