Virginia, on the East Coast of America became an English colony in Shakespeare's time - but only the coastal areas were settled quickly.

In 1609, William Strachey, while shipwrecked in Bermuda en route to Virginia, wrote a letter that probably inspired the shipwreck scenario for The Tempest.
