Europe

Although his mind roamed far and wide, Shakespeare perhaps never left England.

This map shows how many people learned about Europe, where so many of Shakespeare's plays were set.

It is one of several maps printed by Abraham Ortelius after 1570.

Pocket versions flew off the presses from 1603, and Shakespeare may well have owned a copy.
