Getting hold of good translations was important. Librarian John Florio translated Montaigne's Essayes from French. Shakespeare probably used at least one of them in writing The Tempest.

Shakespeare may even have based a character on Florio - the schoolmaster Holofernes, from Love's Labours Lost.
