An ornamented binding
This edition of Raphael
Holinshed's Chronicles still features its original
binding - a layer of leather
concealing strong wooden boards.
Bookbinders used a technique
called tooling to apply patterns. This meant
using a hot iron to stamp patterns into the leather. For
repetitive designs or lines, rollers were sometimes used
- allied to a binder's steady hand.[click
