Like Shakespeare,
Field had started life in Stratford as the son of
a tanner.
Two years older than
his fellow townsman, he began training as a printer
when he was 17.
His mentor was the
French refugee Thomas Vautrollier. And
their ties did not end there, since Field later
married Vautrollier's widow.
