Serjeants all at sea as John jilts jury

30 March 1609

William Shakespeare has lost £6 to John Addenbrooke - and he will not get his money back.

Addenbrooke is now a fugitive. Local serjeants-at-mace were ordered to bring him to court, but could not locate him in the Stratford area.

The drama continues. Shakespeare could now choose to recover his cash from Addenbrooke's surety Thomas Hornby.
