Schooldays 1822-1835
Young Mary Ann's talents
were becoming plain to all, but even as a teenager she was fighting
a battle with herself. Mary Ann was so shy that she cried when
asked to play piano for visitors - even though her teacher Rebecca
Franklin described her as a "marvel."
But Mary Ann faced other
challenges too. And although life would be cruel to her in many
ways, some of her worries were simply typical of the times...

Despite her early nerves, Mary Ann remained
a keen pianist for the rest of her life. The grand piano that
later belonged to her is on display at Nuneaton Museum and Art
Gallery.
