Remembering George Eliot 1880 - 2003 Her successful career was cut short by the death of George Henry Lewes. Mary Ann later married a retired banker, John Cross. They spent her last two years together, before she died in 1880. |

Dante Alighieri - she also wrote about 15th century Florence in
Romola. And she was moved to sign her love letters to
John Cross as "thy tender Beatrice" in reference to
Dante's beautiful heroine.
