When publisher John Blackwood agreed to print
Mary Ann's next work Adam Bede, she decided that she
needed a pen name - she chose 'George' as a tribute to Lewes,
and 'Eliot' because it was a "good mouth-filling word."
Surely now nobody could treat George Eliot as
cruelly as they had treated Mary Ann Evans...?
