A weaver?

In the 1820s, when Mary Ann was young,
poor girls could have jobs helping weavers
- even when they were very young.

It was hard work and the days were long.
The looms were large enough to fill a room.

But Mary Ann's dad had enough money
to make sure that she didn't have to do that.

The weavers used looms like this one
to make ribbons.
