If you thought Elizabeth was
the odd one out, you're right
about one thing. Shakespeare did not write any plays about her.
Elizabeth I was Queen of England in Shakespeare's day. Many people
remembered her as a saintly ruler who had defended her country
from tyrants like Philip II, the King of Spain.
You could say Elizabeth is here to illustrate
how people felt about the qualities of the best rulers. As a queen,
she would have been the people's choice. For the people who built
the statue, she was everything that their own government was not!
