Shakespeare the Republican

A medal struck in the 18th century
from a design by Jean Dassier.

Shakespeare is paired with the
Republican John Selden.

Though this medal was struck
after the English Civil War,
Selden was then a reknowned lawyer,
who opposed King Charles I.

After the Civil War,
when the monarchy was restored,
many of Shakespeare's own plays
were rewritten by factions
seeking support for their causes.
